One of the most common things we hear from clients considering a move to Boston’s northern suburbs is some version of: “But what about the food scene?” The assumption that great dining requires a trip into the city is becoming harder and harder to defend.
The stretch of towns north and northwest of Boston — Burlington, Arlington, Watertown, Melrose, Woburn, and the communities in between — is experiencing a genuine dining moment. New concepts are opening, established names are expanding into the suburbs, and some of the most-talked-about tables in the entire Boston area right now happen to have free parking outside.
Here’s a look at what’s new and what’s coming.

Already Worth the Drive
Sorella Cucina Toscana
The beloved Tuscan Kitchen has been reborn as Sorella — a modern Italian concept that trades nostalgia for elevation. Scratch-made pastas, reimagined classics like Bolognese and lobster pizza, and a stunning bar that is already turning heads. Burlington locals are not waiting long to make this one a regular.
Van Leeuwen Ice Cream
The New York-born cult creamery has landed at Burlington Mall — and it was worth the wait. Inventive flavors like honeycomb and marionberry cheesecake sit alongside classic and vegan scoops, milkshakes, and fresh-baked cookie sandwiches. Simple ingredients, exceptional quality, and a line that tells you everything you need to know.
Crack’d Kitchen & Coffee
The breakfast sandwich has been elevated, and Burlington is better for it. The corner spot on Middlesex Turnpike is open, the espresso is strong, and the egg sandwiches are genuinely worth the trip. Bright interior, patio seating, weekday dinner service, and a menu built around cage-free egg sandwiches, mac bowls, specialty espresso, and milkshakes.
Sumen
A refined ramen, donburi, and sushi concept that has quietly become one of the most talked-about new spots in Arlington. The space is compact, the waits are real, and the food earns every minute of them. Exactly what Arlington Center has been missing.
Boxfish
The Boston Globe put it plainly: restaurants with big money and bigger buzz are not sending out better seafood than this. Ocean-to-table freshness in a cozy 21-seat gem in Coolidge Square, where fine dining technique meets bold, Thai-rooted flavor tradition. The lobster roll is poached in brown butter on brioche. The uni fettuccine is unlike anything else in the suburbs. Every plate surprises.
Table Four
Melrose’s most intimate new spot. Small bites, charcuterie boards, and after-dinner sweets pair alongside a carefully chosen selection of European wines and beers. The owner — a beloved former bartender from Charlie’s Kitchen in Harvard Square — has built exactly the neighborhood wine bar Melrose has always needed.
Wonder
Bobby Flay. José Andrés. Marcus Samuelsson. Di Fara Pizza. All under one roof — and all available in a single order. Wonder is a new kind of food hall where you mix and match from multiple chef-driven menus, with free delivery in under 35 minutes or dine in. Now open in Watertown, Belmont, and Medford, with Burlington coming April 2026.

Get Excited — These Are Coming
Petit Play Cafe
A space where parents can exhale and children can safely explore. Specialty coffee, tea, pastries, and light bites served alongside curated play zones for babies through preschoolers — all designed with soft aesthetics and line-of-sight safety so you never miss a moment. Opening March 28th in Woburn.
Citrus & Salt
The Seaport’s most Instagrammable restaurant is coming to the suburbs. This coastal Mexican tequila bar serves bold Baja-inspired tapas, fresh ceviches, and over 50 tequila and mezcal options behind the bar. Picture-perfect cocktails, shareable plates, and tropical interiors built for your camera roll.
Turns out you don’t have to go into the city for a great meal.
